2011 INSITU Chair Competition Entry: ATHENA

The
Annual INSITU Chair Competition criteria stated to construct a chair
for a cafe in downtown Toronto. Each entry needed to fulfill the
following criteria:
- Reflect the aesthetic of a neighborhood in Toronto
- Features at least 2 different materials
- Only use a maximum of 8 fasteners
- Have a stackable design
- As sustainable as possible
The Athena features Ash Hardwood as the frame material, and Belt Leather for the seat top and seat bottom. Ash is a local lumber to Ontario making it ideal for the Toronto market, and ultimately making the design more sustainable than outsourcing other non-renewable materials from America, or China. The Chair also uses 0 fasteners, and is held together by wood glue and dowel joinery.
